Quercetin
is a bioflavonoid (the component that gives plants its pigment) found in grape skins, red onions, berries, kale, tea, and broccoli.
This very effective bioflavonoid is known for its antioxidant activity in radical scavenging (think PacMan gobbling up the bad guys) and anti-allergic properties by stimulation of the immune system and antiviral activity.
It’s also extraordinarily helpful during allergy season due to its ability to inhibit histamine release and decrease proinflammatory cytokines.
Other possible health benefits of quercetin from the latest studies:
- Fighting free radicals.
Reducing chronic inflammation. - Reducing the risk of all cancers.
- Preventing neurological diseases.
- Preventing infections.
- Reducing the risk of heart disease.
- Lowering high blood pressure.
Selenium
plays an important role in the health of your immune system.
It is a trace mineral available in abundance in brazil nuts, but also other nuts, meat, poultry, and eggs.
This antioxidant helps to lower oxidative stress (we face oxidative stress when we have to decide on something from a menu of 6 items in a restaurant!) This in turn reduces inflammation and enhances immunity.
Studies have demonstrated that increased blood levels of selenium are associated with enhanced immune response.
Selenium is a crucial nutrient that the body needs to stay healthy. Besides immunity, selenium is important for reproduction, thyroid gland function, DNA production, and protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals and from infection.
Studies also show its ability to support cognitive function and fighting asthma among the many benefits of making sure you have adequate selenium in your bloodstream.
