Valerian-A flowering perennial from Europe and Asia, studies show that taking valerian can reduce the amount of time it takes to fall asleep by about 15 to 20 minutes and increase the quality of sleep.
GABA-Gamma aminobutyric acid is a naturally occurring amino acid that works as a neurotransmitter in your brain. GABA enables both your body and mind to relax and fall asleep and to sleep soundly throughout the night. Low GABA activity is linked to insomnia and disrupted sleep. In one study, GABA levels in people with insomnia were almost 30 percent lower than in people without the sleep disorder.
L-Tryptophan-An amino acid that has been used successfully for people with insomnia in many studies. Because it is a serotonin and melatonin precursor, L-tryptophan is a valued component in this formula for sleep.
Chamomile-This plant extract contains apigenin, a chemical compound that induces sleepiness when it binds to the GABA receptors in the brain.
Passion Flower-Research suggests passion flower may help relieve insomnia and anxiety. It appears to boost the level of GABA in your brain, lowering brain activity, which may help you relax and sleep better.
Lemon Balm-Several studies show when lemon balm is combined with other calming herbs (such as valerian and chamomile) it works to help reduce anxiety and promote sleep.
Melatonin-Research suggests that melatonin may be helpful in treating sleep disorders, such as delayed sleep phase, and providing some relief from insomnia and jet lag.
