The Alkaline Life Saver?

When we eat a diet containing too much sugar, protein and grains, our bodies become acidic.

With your body in an acidic state, you may experience pain, weight gain and you may also be at risk of developing any number of diseases.

That’s because a low oxygen (acidic) environment in the body allows for viruses, bacteria, fungus and mold to breed and grow and do all sorts of damage.

On top of that, environmental toxins also lead to acidity within the body. Stress makes you acidic and so do stimulants like coffee, tobacco and alcohol. Given the SAD (Standard American Diet) today, the high amounts of pesticides and chemicals in our daily environment, and the amount of stress most people are under, and it’s easy to see why modern man faces a significant challenge in keeping the body alkaline, neutralizing those surplus acids.

Some common signs that your body might be overly acidic:

– You frequently feel cold
– You lack energy
– You get sick a lot
– You suffer from headaches
– You feel agitated often
– You no longer feel that zest for life
– Your eyes tear more than usual
– Your gums are sensitive
– There are cracks at the corners of your mouth
– You experience heartburn
– You have cracked teeth
– You have frequent throat infections
– You have thin nails that split easily
– Your hair has grown dull
– Your skin is dry
– You experience leg cramps

Your body needs healthy levels of calcium and oxygen to remain in an alkaline state. We get oxygen and calcium from organic leafy green vegetables and other plants.

(You might be surprised by the fact that calcium should be coming from plants, because most of us believe milk to be the best source of this essential mineral. However, plant-based calcium is the form of calcium that’s most easily used by the body.)

The human body is much more intelligent than most of us can fathom. Without working on making the body more alkaline, your body puts up mechanisms to stop the acid from getting into your organs. To do this, your body makes fat cells to use for storage of that acid, to protect your vital organs.

Your body will also steal calcium and other alkaline minerals from your teeth, bones and other body tissues to try and keep things more neutral.

The following are some easy ways to neutralize the acid in your body:

– Snack on natural, unsalted almonds. Almonds are full of calcium and magnesium which can balance acidity in the body while balancing blood sugar.

– Drink lemon water. Freshly squeezed lemon in water can create an alkaline environment in the body. Lemons seem to be acidic but they actually metabolize acids in the body, having a neutralizing effect on body acids.

– Eat lots of green salads tossed in olive oil and lemon juice. The alkaline benefits of the greens and the lemon pack an extra neutralizing punch within the body.

– Take a walk. Exercising helps to move acidic waste around in your body to help you better eliminate excess acids.

– Skip the sugar. Sugar is one of the leading causes of acidity in the body.

– Eat lots of sprouts which are very alkalizing and energy boosting.

– Go meat-free for a day or two. Metabolizing meat leads to acidic residue being left behind in the body.

When you take steps towards neutralizing the acid in your body, you will be doing yourself a huge favor! And you will likely notice some of those unpleasant symptoms of having an overly acidic body start to disappear!

  1. Hi, Leanne … Do you have some research to back this up? I have read that the body keeps the pH of the blood at a constant level by an intricate process of equilibrium. An “acid condition” would be auto-corrected by borrowing alkalinity from mineral deposits (i.e., the skeleton) temporarily. I have heard this theory of “acidic blood” passed around for decades like an urban legend, but have never seen any scientific validation for it. Could you please provide a reference or two? Thanks, Jim

    1. HI!
We realize not everyone is eating Paleo and can go meat free for a day or two 🙂 If it doesn’t work for you then that is okay too! We are here to pass on information, but we always recommend you do what you feel is best. And we want you to do your own research of course!

    2. I go meat free a couple of times a week. Maybe a smoothie for breakfast with fruit, veggies for lunch and dinner. I could throw in a hard boiled egg to any of those meals or for a snack. But yes. Why not?

  2. Get off ALL mass produced grains…get organic grains…non GMO if you can find it…Make your own bread(s)…Get a copy of Wheat Belly…learn alternative ways to make ‘bread’ substitutes…Dr. Davis, the author, speaks of original grains in Wheat Belly…

About sprouts…I’ve a friend in N.J. who is 70…Lives on sprouts…NEVER has had ONE coke or coffee…She’s at her high school playing weight and plays tennis now…SHEESH!

    Talk of DISCIPLINE!

Biggest humanoid problem: addiction to habit ! Change is hard but possible.

    1. grains are actually a big acid producer in the body, specially glutenous grains. wouldn’t you want to keep these low?

      1. According to Dr. William Davis, author of Wheat Belly…the original grains are supposedly ok. They are Einkorn and Emmer. Einkorn is “the grandaddy of all wheat”. Emmer came about as the “evolutionary successor of Einkorn. Einkorn and a wild grass known as goatgrass gave way to Emmer.”

One can actually obtain original Emmer. Dr. Davis tells of a lady in Conn. who went to Israel area and learned of original wheat…and now cultivates same.

Problem with wheat now is it’s been taken over by corporations who mass produce it for PROFIT…They do NOT care if YOU live or die…And that’s the TRUTH…Wheat in general is a low complex carb…Eat some and shortly you’ll want more food/wheat…Low complex carbs raise blood sugar fast…but it’ll come down fast…leaving one hungry for more FOOD…

Know that Dr. Davis has a wheat intolerance…That influences his take on wheat of course. He speaks to making ‘bread’ from flaxseed…I’ve not tried that yet…sounds weird! lol

        1. Dr. Davis’ flaxseed wrap is a GREAT bread alternative! I was very skeptical until I tried it. Very easy and very tasty!

  3. Also known…disease cannot flourish in an oxygenated environment…yes…alkaline…but I’ve read too alkaline isn’t good either…I used to do alkaline drops…didn’t notice much difference. My Dad made it to 3 weeks before 90th b-day. He ate meat/bacon/eggs/toast all his life. Mom now 90…Fairly good diet…Aunt is 93..but failing…ate meat/potatoes all her life. Some live long lives doing these things…Some don’t…so who knows. God knows our time.

  4. I know this to be true ~ but it is so hard for some of us to follow. I have a love/hate relationship with sugar. Wish I could stay off of it ~ but it doesn’t seem possible for me. I’ve been trying for years. But, yes, I totally believe that an alkaline body will stay cancer free. Wish I had the strength of my convictions. 🙁

    1. I feel your pain Peggy! I fight this battle every day. I even have a rare muscle disease which causes me not to be able to metabolize glycogen in my muscles, and I still eat sugar!

  5. I don’t see any science on this Facebook page, Sarah. I am familiar w Dr. Roberts book — and it is mostly opinion and anecdotes, not science. That sugar and refined carbs are inflammatory is well known. I can find very little to support the alkaline diet. The body has a very narrow pH range and manages it very efficiently. I’m not being contrary, just truly curious. Can someone present scientific evidence supporting “acidic blood” or the ability to push the body into an alkaline state (and the health benefits of this)? Thanks in advance. Jim

    1. Jim, you are referring to blood pH, which does stay within range as a necessity, whereas others are referring to body pH, as tested in saliva and urine. They are in relation but not the same, and I do not have the science to share at the moment, just years of reading and looking for answers. Just thought that might be helpful 🙂

  6. Great post, I have out lived my father, three uncles and my grandmother, all of which died of cancer. Even my Mother died of the same at one year older than my current age. At 59 I had issues with my esophagus. Since learning about the bodies Ph level my daily routine includes 1 cup of warm water with one hole lemon squeezed into it. Before the routine I would wake up every other night with acid reflux. Since the lemon routine the occurrence happens once a week and sometimes not every week.

  7. Bad day to talk about going “meat free’ on the Canadian thanksgiving. Another good book to read is Grain Brain by Dr. David Perlmutter (recommended by Dr. Terry Wahls).
