What is the Paleo diet all about anyway?

I get asked that a lot especially considering the fact that I’ve been eating this way myself and have shared a little about that on my radio show. When we talk about a paleo diet, the word “paleo” is an abbreviated term referring to the Paleolithic age when hunter/gatherers lived and what their diets were back then. They ate what they could hunt, fish or gather and that is the basis for this diet: meat, fish, eggs, and lots of veggies, berries and nuts.

Research has shown that our hunter/gatherer ancestors were lean, strong and athletic with none of our modern day maladies such as diabetes, cancer and other illnesses so prevalent today. Interesting, yes?

The basics of the diet are meat, fish, eggs, veggies, some fruit, nuts and seeds. We are obviously going to use delicious methods of cooking and add herbs and spices with our food, as well as liberal use of ghee, coconut oil, balsamic vinegar and some assorted condiments when appropriate (like Dijon mustard or jarred salsa for example).

Paleo is naturally gluten free and dairy free. Eggs are frequently in the diet, as is nitrate/nitrite free bacon.

        I agree, I work in the medical field and feel that this is the way all diabetics should eat.  I am so happy to have found you here after listening to your webinar with Dr. Terry Wahls.  I have been following her since seeing her TED talk and now she has led me back to you! I bought your book in the past but now have been Paleo for almost 6 months and don’t think I’ll ever go back to the Standard American Diet (SAD).  Thank you for doing a Paleo menu, I have been looking for one that is family friendly since October.  I am excited to try your service!

    Paleo/lo-carb IS the way to go! I am the “poster child”!!  LOL  I’ve lost 150 pounds this way, and I  have no cravings and feel so much better and healthier!

    In re: diabetes — YES!  I was introduced to a low carb diet by our endocrinologist. Most of his patients are (naturally) diabetic, and this is the diet he prescribes to them all. I’m on it for weight loss, but my husband is an uncontrolled Type 2, and this is part of his treatment.

    You have to look at it as a lifestyle. If you approach it as a “diet”, it’s a sure fail. You won’t want to give it up once you’re on it, though. Do the research; there’s loads of info on it, and most of them cite improvements in diabetes, heart disease, metabolic disorders, cognitive and mental disorders (ADHD!), and a plethora of other sydromes and ailments brought on by the “healthy diet” that’s been taught to us for the last 40-50 years. Paleo is the way to go.

    This menu mailer is an awesome resource. I recommend both the lifestyle and the mailer!

    I have been reading your e mails since the beginning of time.  I never purchased any of your menus but have just sent for the paleo menu.   it is not a diet — it is a way of life. 
    May I also suggest you check out the GAP diet.  I found it fasinating!  and want to know more about it.  Reading some of the testimonals will bring you to purple puddles.

    I am committed to the paleo diet, but my husband is a vegetarian. Any suggestions on easy, healthy meat substitutions I can make to these recipes? I don’t want to feed him processed things like fake meats and tofu.
