4 Components for Healthy Skin

by Leanne Ely, CNC

The foods that you eat affects every area of your health and nowhere does it show up more than on your skin. Women in particular are notorious for investing huge sums of cash on facial soaps, scrubs, masks, lotions, potions and oils. Of course you want to keep your skin clean and moisturized, but the health of your skin is an inside job, not solely the work of good skincare products.

Make sure you include these vitamin rich foods your skin needs to keep your skin glowing and healthy:

1) Vitamin A is major component for healthy skin and dairy products are full of it! That doesn’t mean you should go chug a gallon of milk, just look for little ways to include it. Use real butter instead of margarine, throw a handful of feta cheese in your salad, or grab a plain Greek yogurt for an afternoon snack.

2) Include those omega-3 fatty acids! Seafood is your best bet here, especially wild salmon.  Another good source for omega-3 fatty acids is flax seed. In order to avail yourself of those omega-3 fatty acids, you need to freshly mill it yourself to keep the fatty acids intact and top your salads with it or add to smoothies. No heating allowed for freshly ground flax or those omega-3’s will be damaged and move from beneficial fatty acids to a trans fat problem!

3) Eat 2 brazil nuts a day. A whole day’s worth of selenium is found in just 2 brazil nuts. Selenium is a major benefit to your skin because it keeps it protected. Add to that the boost to your thyroid function when you have enough selenium in your body. Even in these summer days that tend to end in sunburns, your skin will be less damaged with higher selenium levels. (that doesn’t mean we endorse getting sunburned btw!)

4) And never ever forget those antioxidants! The consumption of abundant, ripe, local and in season fruits and veggies is a natural for building a healthy body and your skin will reap the same benefits. During the summer blueberries, blackberries, and strawberries are all ripe in season, and they also happen to be some of the highest ranked in the antioxidant kingdom.

Follow these 4 tips and watch your skin get beautiful right before your eyes!
