The Fridge (if yours is a nightmare, let’s fix it)

Why is it the last thing to get cleaned in a kitchen is the inside of the refrigerator? I know that’s true for a lot of people; it certainly was for me!

The fridge was the last frontier for me in the kitchen. I could keep the kitchen clean, unload the dishwasher regularly, and keep the floors up, and the pantry reasonably organized. But the fridge? I would let it go. And then it would be a bear to deal with. I had a perfectionistic attitude toward my fridge—it was an all-or-nothing proposition. I would spend an hour or more cleaning every last nook and cranny. Tossing stuff left, right, and center, cleaning the rubber gasket with a toothbrush, pulling everything out, disinfecting it, and making the whole thing gleam. Honest, I could see that thing shine from my bedroom!

One day it dawned on me that I did not have to clean my fridge like that. I could do it one shelf at a time! I could keep things rotated and wiped down in as little as 2 minutes at a time. But the secret for making that happen was what I like to call Refrigerator Awareness. Cleaning the fridge does NOT need to be a project!

All that means is adding Refrigerator Awareness to your radar screen and don’t let that big, old appliance turn into that nasty, dreaded cleaning project! It truly does NOT have to be that way!

Oh and lest I forget. There is a TREMENDOUS bonus that comes from picking up the RA skill (Refrigerator Awareness). You save money. Gobs of it. Your food gets eaten, not shuttled to the back to develop into a science experiment. Your produce doesn’t develop slime, wilt, or become fossilized. And, you may just find something in there you didn’t know you had that needs to be used up! Isn’t that just the coolest thing ever? (pardon the obvious pun!)

To recap 2 minutes a day. That’s all. Let’s put an end to Project Refrigerator Clean-ups. I don’t know about you, but I’ve HAD it with those big jobs!

  1. This sounds like an excellent way to keep the dreaded fridge clean manageable. Although I face a bigger problem, an overloaded fridge, and my biggest challenge is the CONDIMENTS!! Both my husband and I are guilty. We love cooking international foods and find ourselves using various sauces and pastes (both homemade and store bought) to cook with. Most of which can be kept for a long time however not used as often. Needless to say sifting around through numerous small bottles and jars is very annoying and leaves our eggs and produce fighting for elbow room. Do you have any suggestions for such a problem? Thanks!
    Condiment Queen 😉

  2. Leeann, I’m converted! As to condiment management — when I open the
condiment I write the date on it with a Sharpie. It makes it really easy
to know when to toss them. Before that it was struggle to keep from
wasting food and not quite remembering how long it’d been in the fridge.

  3. I have my tall skinny and small condiments on small lazy susans by Rubbermaid in my fridge. Hot sauce, thai pastes, sesame oil, balsamic glaze, etc, I actually have two in my fridge. The often used mayo, mustards, pickles, almond butter and the like hang out in the door shelves.

  4. i do the fly lady way I clean mine every Wednesday wipe it down. I love my freezer on the bottom makes cleaning the top so much easier as you don’t have to bend over I have a french door style.

I have pea pod delivery on Wednesdays so I get mine ready night before plus that’s our trash day. i have little to nun waist in food as I freeze allot and use my food saver to seal things so they last longer. plus I compost all my veggie cuttings and fruit plus the birds get some and other critters I don’t waste any thing. less in the trash. i use Noewex Oder crystals in my fridge and freezer I have no smells at all. going on 5 years now , they last a very long time .
