Diabetic Meal Plans

I had an interesting coaching client who needed some help with diabetic meal plans. After we finished our session, I reflected on what we had talked about and started to laugh—the way I would coach someone with diabetes is the way I would coach anyone. Here’s why–

Diabetic meal plans are one of the healthiest ways to eat. They are loaded with veggies, they have quality protein, a complex carbohydrate and most importantly, they’re portion controlled. Most of us don’t have a problem picking up the fork; it’s putting it down that we run into trouble!

When you’re struggling with diabetes though, you have to learn to put down your fork or you’ll be putting your health in jeopardy. Complications from diabetes include stroke, kidney failure, heart attack, arthritis and more. It’s nothing to mess around with!

But the good news is it is a disease that can be controlled with good nutrition, portion control, regular exercise and weight loss. To me, being able to actually DO something about a condition is exhilarating—what a blessing! There are so many people who have conditions and diseases that they are helpless against. Diabetes is not one of them.

Here are some helpful food things to do for folks with diabetes:

1) Buy a scale. Weigh and measure everything till you can eyeball a portion a block away. Knowing how much you’re eating is one of the keys to controlling this disease.
2) Drink coffee. Research shows that coffee decreases insulin resistance and can decrease the development of the disease by as much as 25%!
3) Use cinnamon. Insulin receptivity increases by the use of cinnamon, just 1/2 teaspoon a day.

There you go— “diabetic meal plans”, LOL!

Be well!

  1. I, too am a wellness coach working with diabetics, people with weight issues and inflammatory diseases such as lupus, MS, rheumatoid arthritis and heart disease. Those smoothies really are a great tool for restoring health. I do use soy protein which is non genetically modified and minimally processed as well as whey protein powder. My clients have had amazing results getting their health back with 2 smoothies per day with their supplements. It’s nice to know we can take charge of how we feel.
