Is Your Lifestyle Health Sustainable?

by Leanne Ely, CNC

Nothing is more important to the state of our health than the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. We know that the choices we make today can have long term effects on our quality of life for years to come and yet often we make choices that are less than ideal and maybe even harmful to ourselves and those we love. Why do we do that? I believe it has a lot to do with instant gratification.

You don’t have to be a radical environmentalist to appreciate the sustainability concept of how our food is grown. Sustainable practices (ie: organic farming) takes us out of the tragic cycle of poisoning our environment. When we put pesticides on plants, it runs into the ground. which then leaks into the water supply. This means these pesticides are grown right into the food supply and is then ingested; pesticides aren’t washed off, they’re inside the plant itself. This practice is causing long term damage for generations to come. Simply put, if our environment is unhealthy then we will be unhealthy too. This is just one of the many reasons I recommend eating as locally and organically whenever possible.

It’s easier to do than you think and thanks to the Environmental Working Group (ewg.org), there are lists to help you pick and choose the healthiest and cleanest stuff–check them out:

If I can make one more plea–please buy locally. It’s not only greener, it supports your community as well. Need help finding an organic local farm, check out localharvest.org

I’d love your feedback–have you found a local organic co-op? How do you save money and eat organically at the same time? One way to save money so you can go organic is to plan your menu (you knew I was going to say that didn’t you?) Subscribe to our Menu-Mailer now so you’re all set for the New Year!

  1. Would love to join a co-op. Definitely need to make the changes I’ve been saying I will do for so long. I’m in Matthews – do you know any good co-ops in the area? Thanks!
