Nuts over Coconut Vinegar

Several weeks ago, I wrote an article about white vinegar and how you must be very careful to find a source without GMOs.

If you’ve been looking for a good alternative to white vinegar since then, you might be interested in trying coconut vinegar instead.

Yes, coconut is the star of many a meal these days, with the popularity of coconut oil, coconut aminos, coconut sugar, coconut milk, coconut water, coconut butter, and so on and so forth. And, as it turns out, coconuts also provide a great healthy source of vinegar.

Coconut vinegar is like other types of fermented vinegar such as balsamic vinegar and apple cider vinegar. It’s made from the sap or the water of the coconut tree. I’ve been spotting coconut vinegar for the first time in my local health food stores recently, but the folks of Southeast Asia and the Philippines have been onto this healthy vinegar for quite some time.

Coconut vinegar is a white, cloudy vinegar with quite an acidic taste. When you purchase a bottle of coconut vinegar, like apple cider vinegar, it still contains the “mother,” which is the culture of organisms that created the fermentation of the vinegar. For that reason, you’ll want to give the bottle a good shake before each use.

And, because we’re talking about a coconut product here, you can be assured that coconut vinegar is packed with nutrients.

Low glycemic index. Coconut vinegar is also low on the glycemic index, registering a 35, making it a good choice for diabetics.

Mineral-rich. Trees used to make coconut vinegar are grown in volcanic soil that is very rich in minerals. The sap in coconut trees contains iron, potassium, phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, boron, zinc, copper, and manganese.

Amino acids. All 9 essential amino acids can be found in coconut sap. Amino acids play a key role in many bodily functions from detoxification, neurotransmission, and even the formation of hemoglobin.

Use coconut vinegar in dressings and marinades like you would apple cider vinegar. It lends itself especially well to Asian-flavored dishes.

Have you encountered coconut vinegar on your culinary travels? Tell me about your experiences here.

  1. I love coconut oil, have used it 3x a day for myself and my father, who has dementia. And I love Bragg’s apple cider vinegar. I didn’t know this existed, I will definitely track some down. Thank you.

  2. I found a bottle of coconut vinegar on the clearance rack at TJ Maxx, but have not tried it yet. I’m looking forward to experimenting!
